Father- and self-taught, Grateful Bread began between Barbara Gillespie and her dad, Lester, baking in their home oven for Oddfellas Cantina eighteen years ago. Quickly they grew and Lester fabricated a huge convection oven and converted the basement into a certified kitchen. Years later, Lester and his wife Martha built a home and within it Barbara’s bakery, right in the heart of Floyd.
Grateful Bread is known for their innovative and authentic Italian-style breads, like jalapeno cheddar, as well as luscious cinnamon rolls.
Barbara sells at local farmers markets, restaurants, and the “Blue Bus Bakery” on Route 8 next to Dogtown. The bakery has expanded to include Ashleigh Ward, chef extraordinaire, who provides custom party platters and party platters and prepared foods onsite at farmers markets. Yes, it’s been a long, strange, and wonderful trip!
