A Smaller Holiday Footprint

Giving and receiving gifts doesn’t have to complicate the holiday season if it’s simplicity that we seek.  No matter which holidays you celebrate redefining traditions around a smaller footprint and reduced consumption can be done.

An internet search will turn up long lists of more earth friendly gifting ideas such as fabric gift wrap, edible gifts and exchanging good deeds to share of your time and talents.  Each year brings an opportunity to deepen your commitment to a simpler and more joyful holiday season.

Try these clutter-free gift ideas to encourage more memories and less stuff.

Every gift we give up giving is a gift to the world around us.  Prioritize quality over quantity. One homemade, thoughtful gift can take the place of several store-bought ones.

Make second-hand your first choice.  Finding that special treasure at the local thrift store is fun, saves money and reduces the consumption of new goods.

Create meaningful connection with others by spending time together and sharing experiences.  Take a walk outside in nature or through a town’s holiday decorations and festivities.  In time these experiences may become the most cherished memories especially for children.

Have a gift swap of preowned or little-used belongings.  Attach a tag or note to tell the story of the item to add meaning.

Use a “re-gift tag”.  Give permission to the receiver to pass on your gift when the time is right for them.  Prints of these tags are available at the Refill Station at the Farmers Market.

Give of your talents and skills through a local community organization or service opportunity.  Serving others brings great joy and can make a lasting impact.

Purchasing classes, memberships or other specific experiences is tangible without being wasteful or adding to the post-holiday clutter.

Start with less.  Throughout the year, make an intention to donate or pass on unwanted items that have lost their utility or value to you.  When the gift giving season arrives it can feel less burdensome.  You may even find that you “have room” for the newfound belongings. Centering your holiday gift giving and celebrations around less impactful choices keeps the focus on the joy and meaning of the season.  Humbly accepting gifts and remaining clutter free makes a statement to others and could even inspire your friends and family to make similar choices.
