Good news! Glass recycling comes to the Greater Roanoke Valley during the week of April 17 through April 22nd.
As part of its Earth Day activities, Hollins University, in conjunction with Students for Environmental Action, is sponsoring this recycling event. Their goal is to collect 2000 pounds of residential glass as well as collecting data about the potential volume that is available in this region.
The greater Roanoke Valley community is invited to bring their household glass to the recycling center at Hollins. Signs will be posted to guide the public to the West Parking Lot on campus where the county has its recycling containers. The collection center will be open 24/7. RDS, the new recycling company in the valley, will be accepting this “urban ore” and processing it into landscaping sand. All colors of glass will be accepted. However, blue glass needs to be deposited into a separate designated bin. It is destined either for use in the Hollins Community Garden as a raised bed border or donated to a local artist to be repurposed into sculpture.
Accepted: Consumer grade glass, including clear, green, and brown glass bottles and jars. Blue glass in separate container
Not Accepted: Auto glass, any plate or window pane glass, light bulbs, or ceramic pots
Point of contact: Rosalie M. Kell, Recycling Coordinator Hollins University / 540- 797-0820 rkell@hollins.edu
* Colored glass can be taken to the Transfer Station on Storkers Knob in Floyd but will not be picked up from Recycling Stations around the county at this time.
