Mid-summer crops arrive: August 3 Farmers Market Report

IMG_2444As the weather warms and dries, more mid-summer crops are appearing in the market. This weekend we saw Canary and sprite melons in the market. Soon we should see cantaloupes and watermelons! Sweet corn, eggplants, summer squash, and field tomatoes are in the market in stronger volumes. We should be set for our heirloom tomato contest in mid-August!

August 17th the Floyd Farmers Market will host its annual Floyd’s Best Tomato contest. There will be two categories: Best Tomato, which is to say “best-tasting” tomato, and Biggest Tomato, which is determined by weight. There will be First Prize and Runner-Up awards for both categories! Sign up will start at around 10 am and last until 11 am. Tasting will start shortly after 11 am and will last around an hour (or until all the samples are gone of at least one entry), after which we will announce winners. Please be able to provide the varietal name of your entry!

Come to the Floyd Farmers Market 8:30am to 1:00pm on Saturdays under the Floyd Community Pavilion!
