SustainFloyd will present the exciting movie, “A Fierce Green Fire: The Battle for a Living Planet” this Saturday, November 9th at the Floyd Country Store. “A Fierce Green Fire,” narrated by Robert Redford, Ashley Judd and Meryl Streep, was the Official Selection of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Everyone is also invited to enjoy a dessert bar first at 6 p.m. The riveting documentary, the first big-picture exploration of the environmental movement, will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The evening will be sponsored by the Association of Energy Conservation Professionals (AECP), a non-profit energy education and advocacy organization that believes people have the power to make better decisions and smarter choices in their home, business, and lifestyle that will save money, save energy, save on our natural resources, and help to preserve the environment.
“A Fierce Green Fire,” directed and written by Academy Award-nominated Mark Kitchell, has won acclaim at festivals around the world. The film focuses on activism: People fighting to save their homes, their lives, the future – and succeeding against all odds. You do not need to be a member of SustainFloyd to attend “A Fierce Green Fire,” part of SustainFloyd’s 2013 Winter Film Series.
Afterward, there will be a panel discussion featuring Floyd County author Fred First, who has written extensively about environmental issues, Floyd artist Gibby Waitzkin, a board member of Clean Air Cool Planet, and Theresa “Tree” Gigante, a 20-year political, environmental and human rights activist specializing in issues affecting indigenous peoples. Ms. Waitzkin has also helped promote the World Wildlife Fund’s Climate Campaign and the work of the Pew Center on Climate Change. Ms. Gigante sells flowers and distributes literature about mountaintop removal and other issues through her business, Perennial Uprisings.
A $5 donation for the movie will be requested, along with additional donations for desserts. The doors of the Floyd Country Store will open at 6 p.m.
